DNV CLEAN / CLEAN DESIGN Notation

DNV's class notation for voluntary environmental performance beyond MARPOL. CLEAN covers operational emissions + discharge control; CLEAN DESIGN adds design provisions (double-bottom, ballast treatment, bilge / sludge, bio-degradable lube oils). Owners use it for port rebates and charter preference.

CLEAN requires all four operational items. CLEAN DESIGN requires CLEAN plus all four design items. Partial scores are indicative only; DNV surveyor sign-off is required for the actual notation, and specific ship types have additional requirements (e.g. tankers: inert gas system; passenger ships: grey-water treatment).
