The ABC DZC series is a family of medium-speed and high-speed four-stroke marine, rail traction, and stationary diesel engines produced by Anglo-Belgian Corporation NV (ABC) in Ghent, Belgium. The series spans in-line and V configurations with cylinder counts from six to twelve, output ranges from approximately 600 to 3,400 kilowatts, and operating speeds from 600 to 1,000 revolutions per minute. ABC has been a continuously operating marine engine builder since 1912, and the DZC series is its principal post-2000 product line. The engines are particularly well-known in inland waterway, dredging, fishing, and rail traction applications across Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and selected export markets.

Series structure

The DZC family is organised by cylinder count and configuration:

  • 6DZC: in-line six. Output approximately 600 to 1,200 kilowatts.
  • 8DZC: in-line eight. Output approximately 800 to 1,600 kilowatts.
  • 6DZD: in-line six (later development). Output approximately 1,000 to 1,400 kilowatts.
  • 8DZD: in-line eight. Output approximately 1,400 to 1,900 kilowatts.
  • 12DZC and 16VDZC: V12 and V16 (where offered, depending on era). Output up to approximately 3,400 kilowatts.

The current production lineup as of 2026 emphasises the 6DZD, 8DZD, 12VDZD, and 16VDZD with progressive updates for emission compliance (the D suffix denoting later compliance generation). Bore and stroke vary by version, with the DZD generation around 256 millimetres bore and 280 millimetres stroke.

Fuel and emissions

The DZC and DZD series operate on marine diesel oil, marine gas oil, biodiesel blends including HVO, and on selected ratings on natural gas and methanol with appropriate dual-fuel modifications. ABC offers IMO Tier II compliant ratings as standard and Tier III compliant ratings with selective catalytic reduction. The company has been an early advocate of biofuel and HVO compatibility, citing the inland waterway and short-sea shipping markets’ interest in low-carbon liquid fuels.

ABC’s smaller scale relative to MAN, Wärtsilä, and Caterpillar allows it to support customised engine configurations and emission compliance solutions for niche operators, which is a meaningful competitive advantage in the European inland waterway market where vessel operators face complex national emission regulations.

Applications

The DZC series is concentrated in specialised European applications. Notable application categories include:

  • Inland waterway cargo vessels operating on the Rhine, Scheldt, Maas, and Danube river systems.
  • Tugboats and pusher tugs for canal and inland operation.
  • Dredgers, including grab dredges, suction dredges, and trailing suction hopper dredges.
  • Fishing vessels, particularly Dutch and Belgian beam trawlers and seiners.
  • Short-sea coasters and small ferry services.
  • Locomotive prime movers for shunting and light line haul, particularly on Belgian and Dutch national rail networks.

Anglo-Belgian Corporation history

Anglo-Belgian Corporation was founded in Ghent in 1912 as a producer of stationary diesel engines for industrial and agricultural use. The company progressively diversified into marine engines through the inter-war period and emerged as a specialised mid-size diesel engine builder for the Belgian, Dutch, and German inland waterway and short-sea fleets. The DZC series was introduced in the 1970s as the company’s medium-speed product line and has been continuously developed through several generations.

ABC remained privately held for most of its history. In 2018 it was acquired by the Ogepar Group, a Belgian industrial holding, and subsequently expanded its export presence into selected Asian and African markets. The Ghent plant continues to manufacture engines, perform component overhauls, and provide service to the global installed base.

Service network

ABC supports its engines through a small but highly specialised service network in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and selected ports in southern Europe. The company emphasises long product service lifetimes and component-level overhaul, with many DZC engines installed in the 1980s and 1990s still in active service after multiple major overhauls.

Comparable engines

The DZC series competes in its niche segment principally against the Caterpillar 3500 (in tug and dredge applications), the MTU Series 4000 (in fast craft applications), the MAN D2868 (in inland waterway), and the small-bore Wärtsilä 20 series (in coastal vessels). ABC’s competitive proposition is durability, customisation, and proximity to European inland waterway customers; it does not compete on raw output or global service network.
