Formula, assumptions, and limits
V_sludge in cubic metres, V_fuel daily fuel/oil throughput, p sludge generation as percent of throughput (typically 0.5 to 2 percent for HFO purifier, 0.2 to 1 percent for lube oil purifier), t voyage segment in days, k reserve factor 1.1 to 1.3. Sludge is held on board until reception facility delivery; the sludge tank must hold all sludge generated between disposal opportunities. MARPOL Annex I provides the regulatory framework for sludge handling.
