Embodied CO₂ of Shipbuilding

Steel, machinery, electronics and paint add up to the embodied CO₂ of a new ship hull. Most of it is in the steel - ~2 t CO₂ per tonne of rolled ship-plate. Use this as the upper bound for lifecycle-GHG accounting when comparing retrofit vs newbuild.

Formula, assumptions, and limits

Sum of material masses × process-specific emission factors. Aluminium is higher than expected because of electrolysis power (> 10 t CO₂/t in fossil-grid supply; < 3 t/t for hydro-powered smelters). The numbers get fuzzy for electronics and composites; this tool stops at the four largest categories.
