Ship-type requirement (1 / 2 / 3) for carrying a given chemical cargo, per IBC Code Chapter 2.

Ship Type 2 - max 3000 m³ per tank, double bottom + wing tanks
Formula, assumptions, and limits
IBC Code matches ship structural survivability to cargo hazard. Most current chemical tankers are built as Type 2 to permit the widest cargo range. Type 1 needed for the most dangerous commodities (phosphorus, cyanide, specific acids).
