Hydraulic Cylinder Velocity
v = Q / A - extend / retract velocity from pump flow and cylinder area.
Extend velocity
0.050m/s
Retract velocity
0.073m/s
Formula, assumptions, and limits
$$v = \frac{Q}{A}$$
Retract stroke is faster because of reduced area on the rod side. Return-flow to tank from retract = $Q_{\text{ret}}$ · $A_{\text{ext}}$ / $A_{\text{ret}}$, which can exceed pump flow - size return filters accordingly.
Symbol legend
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| $Q$ | Oil flow | m³/s (from L/min ÷ 60000) | pump rating |
| $A$ | Piston area | m² | geometry |
