EEOI - Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator
Cargo-work-based CO₂ intensity per MEPC.1/Circ.684 - grams CO₂ per tonne-mile of cargo actually carried. The oldest of the IMO operational intensity metrics.
Cargo work (summed over all voyages)
Fuel consumption (all voyages, laden + ballast)
EEOI
7.785gCO₂ / (t·nm)
Total 7.8 kt CO₂.
Formula, assumptions, and limits
EEOI = Σⱼ (Fⱼ × Cfⱼ × 10⁶) / Σᵢ (mᵢ × Dᵢ)
- Fⱼ - mass of fuel j burned over the reporting period.
- Cfⱼ - MEPC.364(79) CO₂ conversion factor.
- mᵢ × Dᵢ - cargo mass carried on voyage i × distance of voyage i.
EEOI is useful where the ship-type capacity basis (DWT for AER, GT for cgDIST) doesn't reflect actual utilisation - e.g. a bulker running half-empty vs full. Ballast legs hurt EEOI since they burn fuel without contributing cargo work.
